IFTA is India’s 1st people’s Choice Awards, with an aim to acknowledge and acclaim the versatile talent in the Indian Film, Television, OTT and Music industries.
Team IFTA believes that there is no better judge than the audience. So IFTA gave the voting rights to the ultimate consumers of the content – the viewers. There is no jury or panel involved in making the decision for the winner.
IFTA has a dedicated market research team that works diligently to find the potential list of nominees who then compete to win the particular category. Spread across various categories, the IFTA market research team makes nomination lists based on primary & secondary market research and analysis. These lists are then made public for the audience to vote. The Nominee getting the highest number of votes wins that particular award category.
It is the era of the Actor
In the 80s and 90s, viewers used to celebrate the success of the actors based on the kind of movie roles they used to do. There were prototypes set for a bunch of actors who did hero roles and then there were actors who played villains. Based on these performances stars and superstars of that time were declared. However, times have changed and actors nowadays deliberately refrain from being typecasted, so as to avoid losing their relevance.
Additionally, choosing different roles not only promotes versatility but also adds more brownie points to an actor’s filmography. Thus, IFTA brings the category of Most Popular Bollywood Actor to celebrate the adaptability of these actors.
Time to Announce the Winner
This actor has had an on-and-off journey at the Box Office. He had a dry run at the movies and people started to disdain him. But recently he not only made a roaring return but also showcased his acting prowess to the fullest. With 3744 public votes, Sidharth Malhotra won the Most Popular Bollywood Actor award for portraying Captain Vikram Batra in Shershaah. Sidharth gave this character everything from heroism to romance, and from emotions to patriotism. All these efforts did not go in vain and people showered love for him in form of the votes.
On number two with 975 votes, Kartik Aaryan impressed the audience with his performance in Dhamaka. Kartik played Arjun Pathak, a news presenter in the film. Many believed that Kartik is just good at mugging up long monologues and is a mediocre as an actor. Kartik not only crushed all these perceptions with a careerdefining performance in the film but also showed multiple facets of Arjun, be it anxiety, stress, anger, and outrage, he nailed it all. This Netflix film brought a sea change in his stagnant career.
The third spot is attained by Masaan fame Vicky Kaushal for Sardar Udham with 795 votes. Vicky played the title role in this Shoojit Sircar directorial venture. Vicky gave Sardar Udham a sense of reality, to an extent, where he literally made the audience weep miserably in the last forty-five minutes of the film, during the “Jallianwala Bagh massacre scene”. Vicky’s dialogue “Koi Zinda Hai” sent chills down the spine. That is the impact, that the actor left on the viewers.
Some Honourable Mentions
At number four is Akshay Kumar for Sooryavanshi. Akshay played the larger-than-life top-cop Surya in this Rohit Shetty Cop universe.
Following Akshay is Dhanush for Atrangi Re. The names that follow include Ranveer Singh for 83, Anupam Kher for The Kashmir Files and Arjun Kapoor for Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar.
