IFTA is India’s 1st people’s Choice Awards, with an aim to acknowledge and acclaim the versatile talent in the Indian Film, Television, OTT and Music industries.
Team IFTA believes that there is no better judge than the audience. So IFTA gave the voting rights to the ultimate consumers of the content – the viewers. There is no jury or panel involved in making the decision for the winner.
IFTA has a dedicated market research team that works diligently to find the potential list of nominees who then compete to win the particular category. Spread across various categories, the IFTA market research team makes nomination lists based on primary & secondary market research and analysis. These lists are then made public for the audience to vote. The Nominee getting the highest number of votes wins that particular award category.
Bollywood and Comedy
Bollywood has always aced the genre of comedy with iconic characters like Babu Bhaiya, Majnu Bhai, Circuit, and Basanti, the list is long and the laughter is inherent. These characters are a result of a solid writing and great improvisations by the actors.
Comedy can also be supremely difficult for a genre to be played. Kudos to all the actors who picked up these comic roles and made them their own. IFTA understands the efforts in shaping these performances, thereby, bringing the award category of Most Popular Comic Performance in 2021-22.
Time to Giggle as the winner is….
People say that just his neck is enough to deliver emotion and he need not to utter a line for the audience to understand his mind. The role of Bhanu Pratap Pandey from the film ‘Mimi’, created such a connection with the audience that it ultimately left them rolling on the floor laughing. Those waves of laughter transitioned into votes making Pankaj Tripathi win the award with 988 public votes.
Following Pankaj Tripathi is a relatively fresh actor, but his cute looks and pitch-perfect comic timing has made him a household name. And the actor is Varun Sharma, who got 801 votes for Roohi. Varun played Kattanni Qureshi in this film who starts falling in love with a witch. Varun’s love angles in Bollywood films have always been eccentric. Remember his entire segment with Bholi Punjaban in Fukrey?
Next in the list is an actress, who in an interview with Film Companion, adored the comic timing of the late Sridevi and had shown her interest in doing a comic role. She is none other than Sara Ali Khan , who not just wooed the nation with Haye Chaka Chak, but also with her solid comic timing in Atrangi Re, got 532 votes.
Some Honourable Mentions
On number four, its the supremely talented Kriti Sanon for playing Aanya Mehra in Hum Do Hamare Do. Interestingly, Rajkumar Rao holds the fifth, sixth, and seventh ranks for his performances in Roohi, Badhai Do, and Hum Do Hamare Do respectively. Pankaj Tripathi returns on number nine for his role in Kaagaz. Gauahar Khan for 14 Phere, Saif Ali Khan for Bhoot Police, and Karan Deol for Velle are some of the other popular names who attained other positions on the chart.
