IFTA is India’s 1st people’s Choice Awards, with an aim to acknowledge and acclaim the versatile talent in the Indian Film, Television, OTT and Music industries.
IFTA has a dedicated market research team that works diligently to find the potential list of nominees who then compete to win the particular category. IFTA is the first ever People’s Choice Award in India that primarily focuses on the viewers who are the ultimate consumers of any type of content.
The final IFTA Nominee list is set out to the public, where they vote for their favourite artist. The nominee who gets the maximum number of votes wins the award.
Celebrating the on-screen baddies
Bollywood has masterfully given the public some iconic negative characters in the form of Mogambo, Gabbar, and Kancha Cheena, just to name a few. The dialogues they uttered used to send shivers through the nerves of the viewers. With the evolution of cinema, the antagonists have also left behind those dramatised versions of playing those characters. Now is the time for more naturalistic performances.
That is why IFTA feels privileged to applaud these iconic on-screen antagonists with an award. As it is very difficult to play a character who has no room for being likeable. It is very hard to generate a sense of animosity towards the character from the audience.
All Weapons loaded – as the Winner is….
He is a veteran as he knows the drill on how to play an ultimate “baddie”. He did an exceptionally well job in giving the pitch-perfect antagonism to Maulana Kader Usmani in Sooryavanshi. The on-screen hatred for this character translates into the form of love for Gulshan Grover who topped the chart with 970 votes.
Following Gulshan Grover is an actor who we all love in out-and-out action films. To see him in a negative role was a complete surprise. And that is how number two is the dreaded criminal Amartya Rao Naik from Mumbai Saga played by John Abraham. Sangay Tsheltrim’s popular character Lota from Radhe got the third spot.
Some honourable mentions
On number four is the supremely talented Pallavi Joshi for her portrayal of Professor Radhika Menon in The Kashmir Files. It is also fascinating that Pallavi is the only female on the winners’ list.
It is good to see how a spin-off film from the universe of Kahaani by Sujoy Ghosh also got noticed. The film is about Bob Biswas and it is the story of an antagonist. Abhishek Bachchan got the seventh rank for playing the titular role.
