IFTA is a brainchild of PolBol Media, where the intent is to acknowledge and acclaim the versatile talent in the Indian Film, Television, OTT and Music industries.
With a keen eye on the new happenings in the world of art, the IFTA marketing team creates a list of nominations based on myriad factors like popularity, public reception and response, and critical acclaim, just to name a few.
This list is then circulated to the public and they vote for their favourite artist. The performer who gets the maximum number of votes wins an award, simple right. Just like democracy, it is for the people, by the people, and to the people. That is why IFTA proudly calls it India’s first People’s Choice Award.
OTT is a whole new planet for Entertainment
OTT handled our daily dose of entertainment during the pandemic. The world switched to many OTT platforms as there is an infinite type of content available. The best part about OTT is that the viewers get to see the stories of the primary, secondary, and tertiary characters in depth. Due to a longer running time, the fondness for these supporting characters increases manifold.
In the span of multiple episodes many facets of these secondary characters are easily explored. For instance, in a show like Mirzapur, we know the entire back story of Beena Tripathi played by Rasika Dugal. We know her dreams, desires, and ambitions. We know her character goals and can also foresee her forthcoming reactions to actions. That is how OTT created a semi-universe for all these supporting characters.
Therefore, the category of Most Popular OTT Supporting Actress becomes worth discussing and applauding.
All Curtains up as the Winner is……
The typical build-up first, this is a show that soon after its release got embroiled in controversy as it showcased drug abuse by a teenager. Well, the teenager was in reality an adult actor, and this controversy on Twitter and other social media platforms soon burnt into ashes. This is Netflix’s most talked about show “Bombay Begums” and the actor who faced the backlash also managed to find love in the form of public votes. With 2482 public votes, Aadhya Anand topped the chart and won the IFTA 2022 for Most Popular OTT Supporting Actress.
Following her with 766 public votes is Radhika Madan for Ray. Ray was an anthology series that paid homage to the works of Satyajit Ray. On 3rd position, it’s Gayatri Bharadwaj with 335 votes for Dhindora.
Some Honourable mentions
Ashlesha Thakur and Shreya Dhanwanthary got the fourth and sixth positions respectively for their performances in The Family Man 2. Kani Kusruti and Rasika Dugal also made their presence aptly felt in Ok Computer.
Two more actresses from Bombay Begums attained ranks. These are Shahana Goswami and Amruta Subhash. It is good to see how a beautiful performance by Wamiqa Gabbi in Grahan also got noticed on the list.
